Montessori Potty Training: What I Wish I Knew

Montessori Potty Training Method: What I Wish I Knew before Starting

I wanted to use the Montessori method for my daughter's potty training. I would have done things differently for a smooth transition if I had been involved in the Montessori method.

The Montessori potty training method is used.

Montessori takes into account a child's emotional and social development as well as their physical and intellectual development, and encourages independence through doing. The Montessori curriculum was used to teach many intelligent minds, including Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. You can learn about the pros and cons of Montessori education. Here.

There is a Montessori approach to every aspect of a child's life. That includes potty training.

The first Montessori approach to potty training was to let the child roam around the house without clothes. They had nothing on their butt.

I was skeptical when I read this, but I was happy to see that her child was potty trained in 5 days.

I thought it would only last 5 days, but I decided to go ahead and do it.

Keep spaces limited if you don't like surprises.

She could roam nakedly, but the spaces she could in was not limited. It felt like we were training a dog to go to the bathroom. I would find surprises in places I had never thought of: on bed pillows, in the kitchen, on the couch, everywhere.

I should have kept her entertained in one area. Our activities are in the same area as her potty.

Stay home and save your headaches.

My mom would take my daughter for a few days every week when I was potty training her. I was desperate for a break and I had heard from experienced moms that they should not leave the house during this time.

I took her to my mom's house. My daughter made a fascinating discovery, that if she had a pull-up on her butt, she didn't have to deal with the hassle of going to the potty or cleaning up an accident.

She would only use the potty if she was bare butt.

This May, it's obvious that your child should wear underwear.

I would see children in their underwear while visiting Montessori daycares. The child feels better when they wear underwear than they do when they go naked. The Montessori method of learning is tied in with this.

My daughter would always have an accident when she was wearing clothes. I tried putting her in pants and panties, but she wouldn't wear them.

She won't use her potty when she has on a pull-up.

Get night time pads.

I didn't see much advice on what to do when the child is asleep in my research on the Montessori potty training method. She slept without her bottom on the first few nights.

We tried putting the potty in the room she used to use. She would sleep on wet sheets.

We put a pull-up on her. She will be using nighttime pads so she can get used to it.

You won't mind smelling like cleaning supplies.

I underestimated how messy potty training would be. It is a very dirty apartment that is mostly carpeted. If you live in a home with a lot of carpet, you should get a carpet cleaner. We have a one that can only be used on the floor. I would recommend getting a portable one that is more portable for messes that end up on the couch or anywhere else. Like this one.

Cut up old clothes and towels to make a more eco-friendly solution. You will probably need a commercial sterilizing agent to get the area clean. I like it. The wipes smell like lemon.

You need a strong solution to soak the clothes. I would notice that even after washing some of my daughter's clothes, they would still smell like urine and so would the other clothes in that load.

I love it. Dr. Bronner wrote the book, "Salsa Suds".. It is a natural stain sterilizing agent. It is ultra-concentrated so a little goes a long way. You can apply a little directly to the stain and then soak her clothes in a warm solution of water, vinegar, and sal suds.

Get a stool to encourage independence.

The Montessori curriculum encourages independence. During her potty training, my daughter sat on the counter to brush her teeth or wash her hands. She would need help getting on the counter to wash her hands.

I realized she needed her own stool to be more independent in the potty training process. It makes her more accountable for her own cleaning and that means less oversight on my part.

Here. The stool can be used in the bathroom or kitchen.

Have patience with yourself and your child.

I was confident that the Montessori potty training process would take less than a day. I waited until she was two years old, thinking that she would be better off catching on sooner.

I found out that at 18 months, children go through a growth spurt. It is easier for them to understand new concepts at that time. This is a good time to train for potty training.

You can look for signs that they are ready to potty train. When it gets wet, cue can pull off their diaper and hide in the restroom. Among other signs.

It is a big deal when you are potty training. Be prepared for it as much as possible. Every child will have their own time frame. Consistency and determination are needed to get through the challenges.

Montessori potty training worked well.

There are some things I think I did right after potty training.

The Potty Watch is for the win.

We were going to the restroom every 15 to 45 minutes while we were training. I would forget to set timers or miss them for a variety of reasons. We got a watch for peeing. It worked well for keeping us on track. It was another way to involve her in her training.

The potty watch required you to wear it for a timer to go off, which I liked. My daughter didn't like wearing a watch so we put it on her stuffed animal. It worked well. She would run to the restroom when the timer went off. I would make her a stuffed animal that she could use as a potty buddy. The monkey entertained her and helped her stay on the potty for longer.

The link to the potty watch is similar to the one we used.

Clean up with training bags.

I was not a fan of having to clean out poop. I had just had a baby. I jumped on the potty training pot that had disposable bags. Cleaning was easy. We used the bags we got from the grocery store after we ran out of disposable bags.

I was happy to reuse the bags but I feel guilty that the process isn't completely eco-friendly. I found these bags online. I have seen people use a diaper or pull-up inside of the potty for when they have to go for a pee.

Children love to help.

The Montessori method includes Chaia in the clean up process. When my daughter had to clean up her messes, she changed her pottying behavior.

She had to clean up her messes when she spilled something. I make sure the towels and spray are accessible to her. She would clean up her messes without me asking.

Montessori potty training is possible.

I am still in the middle of potty training. Some days are better than others. I am learning how to make this process better for my daughter.

If you are here, you should be researching the best tactics. Your instincts and your child's ability to learn are important. Be kind to yourself and your child.
